Support in Favor of the Tsunami's victims of Kerala - South India

Fair Wings raised about 8900 Euros for the Tsunami's victims, and wishes to thank the main donors, ABTOF, the Association of British Tour Operators to France, as well as Bill Laidlaw, and all the other donors.

Considering that no rehabilitation work had really started, we privileged families that would have been left over by the government. We also gave priority to villagers already having a professional activity and wishing to start it again. Since most of the inhabitants live from fishing, whether on large boats in the neighboured town or on their shores, with or without engine, on the sea and/or backwaters, or even with the Chinese fishing nets, we decided to spend about 50 % of our budget to help a group of fishermen to start again their activities.

This boat has been given to 6 fishermen who were working together with a boat destroyed by the Tsunami. Since they did not have the official registration of the boat, they were not going to be helped by the government and we therefore decided to give them a 30 feet ply wood fibber boat with a yamaha engine 9.5 HP and over 100 kg of nets and materials such as floats and ropes.

Cost: 233753 INR / 4410 Euros

The first man we have met was a shop keeper selling milk, and having lost his house, his shop, his material, stocks, and, his fridge. We have been very amazed by the dignity this family kept, being one the first to rebuild themselves a small hut next to their destroyed house. The only thing he ever asked us was a new fridge and we therefore bought him a two doors fridge hoping he will shortly get back his house and shop which was being rebuilt at the time we left.

Cost: 13500 INR / 255 Euros

We bought 21 sewing machines for tailors having lost theirs, but also for young girls from training centres. The demand was such that we had to give 1 machine for 2 girls since they demanded it, and we even had complaining women wishing one.

Cost: 61500 INR / 1161 Euros

Some oil, lubrificants as well as one empty barrel have been provided to a man having lost his stock in the Tsunami.

Cost: 3190 INR / 61 Euros

Tools and spare parts which have been lost for a freelance man having a marine workshop.

Cost: 14800 INR / 280 Euros

An electronic scale for a shop keeper.

Cost: 14600 INR / 275 Euros

Sport equipment and a computer for a small non profit organization offering sports and books services for the young of the village. The computer was going to be used to provide various computer training programs to people in need.

Sports equipment 15963 INR / 301 Euros
Computer: 25700 INR / 485 Euros

This young man is suffering from polio and was also among the first we have met just after the tsunami. Having a telephone booth, he needed a billing system which we promised him. However, when we came back, the agency world vision had already bought the machine. He was really in need of a scooter with adapted wheels and despite the fact that this was not really matching our wish to support only private sector rehabilitation projects, it was a real pleasure to purchase him a scooter that nobody would have bought him otherwise.

Cost: 31620 INR / 597 Euros

Books and uniforms for 60 children of a temporary school, created for Tsunami orphelins and poor people, have been given.

Books: 17798 INR / 336 Euros
